With the announcement of the government shutdown today, the country is once again at war with itself. The Democrats are blaming the Republicans, the Republicans are blaming the Democrats, and the average person is caught in the middle. Many choose a side and lay blame alongside the politicians, but there are others out there (like me) who blame both sides and don’t have faith in either one to pull this country out of its tailspin. So what’s left to do when a feeling of helplessness washes over you? In my case, the easy solution is to turn to music, hard rock music to be exact. Mindset Evolution’s “Burn It Down” is the perfect song for the current state of affairs in America.
This country is in desperate need of a “mindset evolution.” Although he wasn’t referring to this situation, the band’s frontman, Rob Ulrich, very succinctly expresses how many people feel today…
“At some point, we’ve all relied on somebody who has no idea what they’re doing.” According to the band’s website, their moniker suggests the importance of change in the face of life’s trials and tribulations. “If you face an obstacle that you can’t pass, you have to change your approach and do something differently. You have to look at it from another angle and find a way around it or through it. That’s what the name is about. That’s what we’re about.”
Imagine what life would be like in America if the useless bureaucrats running the country embraced the concept of a “mindset evolution” rather than drawing lines in the proverbial sand to prove an ideological point. Instead, all we get is childish behavior that hurts the innocent while the ones shutting down the country collect bloated paychecks.
“Burn It Down” starts off calm and melodic and gradually builds into a crescendo of rage with Ulrich’s guttural delivery of the chorus which says to “burn this whole thing down.” Even if the lyrics weren’t so appropriate for the events of the day, the song would still be a kickass hard rock anthem. Maybe the time has come to “burn this whole thing down,” get rid of the people that perpetuate the never-ending problems and replace them with people who want to be a part of the solution.
