What do you get when you cross one of the greatest hard rock singers of the modern era, heartfelt emotional lyrics and a European audience filled with diehard fans? Chills running up and down your spine! Alter Bridge’s “In Loving Memory” was written by guitarist Mark Tremonti to honor his mother after she passed away. When a singer delivers a song as perfectly as Myles Kennedy does in concert, you normally hate to hear the crowd take over, but hearing the people of Amsterdam singing in unison only adds to the magic and emotion of the song.
Kennedy has become a household name amongst hard rock music fans ever since touring and recording with Slash, but long before he was on everyone’s radar, Alter Bridge fans the world over were in awe of his incredible vocals. The live performance of “In Loving Memory” was recorded in Amsterdam in December of 2008 at the Heineken Music Hall, and it continues to touch the hearts of fans to this day. The YouTube video of the performance (below) was posted this week on the Alter Bridge Bangladesh Facebook page by a fan who wrote…“In Loving Memory” – only song that helps me survive when I am down!!!”
Fans of hard rock and metal around the world are incredibly loyal and passionate about the bands that they love, and Alter Bridge’s worldwide fans are no exception. The concert going experience in America is something to look forward to, but having been to hundreds of shows over the years, it’s hard to recall ever being a part of an audience quite like the one in Amsterdam who took “In Loving Memory” to another level.
Towards the end of the song, Kennedy says to the crowd…“Let this go out to everybody that we’ve loved and lost ladies and gentlemen – sing it for ‘em!” As the crowd erupts and belts out the lyrics, you have to believe that Tremonti was uplifted and that somewhere his mom was smiling down on Amsterdam.
If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you can’t help but be moved by “In Loving Memory” (lyrics listed below the video).
Thanks for all you’ve done
I’ve missed you for so long
I can’t believe you’re gone
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly
I never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
But now I come home and I miss your face so
Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see
And I know, you’re a part of me
And it’s your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can’t hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me…ooooo ooooo ooooo
I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of
The one that was so true
You were as kind as you could be
And even though you’re gone
You still mean the world to me
I never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always waiting
But now I come home and it’s not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I can’t believe you’re gone
And I know, you’re a part of me
And it’s your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can’t hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me
I’m glad He set you free from sorrow
I’ll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still
And what you did you did with feeling
And you always found the meaning
And you always will
Yeah you always will
Yeah you always will…ooooo ooooo ooooo
And I know, you’re a part of me
And it’s your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can’t hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me
