PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
HELLYEAH – “Love Falls”
With a reach across the United States and Canada, SiriusXM’s Octane is the most powerful Active Rock station in North America. In some ways, they are the leaders of the format. However, because of the size of their audience, they may be the only ones that can boost a song/artist while the rest of the format seems to be playing catch-up. This has been on display in recent weeks on the Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown, which features songs that have yet to crack the Top 50 on the Mediabase Active Rock chart. One of those songs is “Love Falls” (the latest single from Hellyeah). Not only has the song been on the countdown for multiple weeks, it also spent two of those weeks in the #1 position. So, what does Octane hear that other Active Rock programmers don’t? The answer is another great song from a band in the upper echelon of the format. It’s baffling that this song isn’t already battling for a #1 on the chart, much less not even cracking the top 50.
Like previous hits “Moth” and “Hush,” “Love Falls” is a song that blends a slower tempo with the tortured intensity that you expect from Chad Gray and Hellyeah. What makes this track a bit different is the vibe of the verses, which conjure up memories of classic Type-O Negative. Gray once again delivers clever, thought-provoking lyrics with unrivaled passion. Unless something happens soon, by the time that “Love Falls” makes its eventual climb up the chart, it will feel like an older tune to Octane listeners, but that doesn’t make it any less deserving of the recognition. Hopefully, Active Rock radio will jump on this song sooner rather than later.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, I predicted that the top 3 this week would be Breaking Benjamin, Korn and Papa Roach. The prediction was correct, but what I didn’t see coming was a meaningful drop from the top for Breaking Benjamin combined with a big jump for Papa Roach, which helped them to leapfrog Korn to claim the #1 position. This pair holds a solid lead of around 400 spins, so it’s likely that they remain in the same positions (or flip-flopped) next week. Starset is likely to jump up into the top 3 next week.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Papa Roach turns Breaking Benjamin into a one-and-done #1, climbing to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart just seven days after the most recent change at #1. The ascension of “Help” comes at the expense of a stuck-at-#2 Korn.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No new arrivals in the Top 10 this week…exact same songs only in a different order…
Missio and Avenged Sevenfold both crack the Top 20 this week…
New to the Top 30 this week are Godsmack and A Day To Remember, with the former continuing the recent success for cover songs…
Two new arrivals in the Top 40 this week, including a promising track from Hell Or Highwater…
Only one newcomer to the entire Top 50 this week (after a flurry last week) – the latest single from Black Stone Cherry.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Papa Roach – “Help”
Mastodon – “Show Yourself”
Volbeat (f. Danko Jones) – “Black Rose”
FALLING
Shinedown – “How Did You Love”
Pretty Reckless – “Oh My God”
Halestorm – “Still Of The Night”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Last week, I noted how perseverance paid off for the Rachel Lorin single “I Hate You.” For most of the past week, in the “rolling chart” that’s visible each day, it appeared that something similar would happen for a second straight week. “Right Here and Now” by Message From Sylvia spent time in Top 50 unofficially for the early part of last week, showing up nearly three months after the first signs of radio airplay. When the chart became official for the new week however there were, alas, absent. Fate is sometimes both fickle and a bit cruel.
