PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SHINEDOWN – “Cut The Cord”
It’s no surprise that Shinedown has made a tremendous debut this week on the Active Rock chart with their latest single, “Cut The Cord.” They are one of a handful of bands who reside in the upper echelon of today’s hard rock, so whenever they release new music, fans and programmers alike stand up and take note. The only question at this point is if the song can leapfrog all the way up to #1 with another strong week. With the top two songs on the chart falling back to the pack, the top slot is there for the taking. Perhaps Royal Blood will elevate to the top of the chart for a week as a placeholder (much like Theory Of A Deadman did this week), but the real intrigue is about to begin when the heavyweight battle for #1 ensues. With a song that was absolutely worth the three-year wait, “Cut The Cord” is a very worthy contender. While many songs on Active Rock radio have a similar sound that makes it hard to differentiate between them, Shinedown (thanks in large part to Brent Smith’s outstanding, distinct vocals) is instantly recognizable. There’s a good reason that Active Rock radio programmers have made them a staple of the format. “Cut The Cord” is the latest validation that Shinedown is at a level that is a cut above most modern hard rock bands.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTION
Within the next few weeks, there will be a battle for #1 between five songs that may end up just jockeying for position in the Top 5 for the foreseeable future…
- SHINEDOWN – “Cut The Cord”
- DISTURBED – “The Vengeful One”
- HALESTORM – “Amen”
- FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – “Jekyll & Hyde”
- POP EVIL – “Footsteps”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
NONPOINT – “Misery”
AMARANTHE – “Digital World”
ASKING ALEXANDRIA – “I Won’t Give In”
FROM ASHES TO NEW – “Lost & Alone”
ART OF ANARCHY – “Til The Dust Is Gone”
DROP IT…
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
Devour The Day – “Faith”
Zac Brown Band – “Heavy Is The Head”
Muse – “Dead Inside”
Falling In Reverse – “God If You Are Above”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
There’s a new #1 song atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart this week…but by an extraordinarily slim margin and in fairly unusual fashion. After spending a month stuck one spot behind Breaking Benjamin, “Angel” from Theory Of A Deadman rises to the top of the mountain…or perhaps falls to the top of the mountain. Both songs suffered declines in airplay versus the previous week (down 3% – 7%) but by just a 3-spin margin there’s a new #1 song. How close is that? Less than two-tenths of one percent different. It was also a very fluid thing, as within a matter of hours, the rolling chart showed the songs flip-flopping positions again. It’s still an achievement to reach #1, but doing so in this manner is kind of like backing into the playoffs in sports. Royal Blood and Halestorm remain next in line to take over the top spot IF either of the other two contenders fall back far enough.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch both officially arrive in the Top 10 this week…
Shinedown provides a third consecutive week with an exceptionally high debuting song, premiering at #12 with their latest single, “Cut The Cord”… Despite what sounds/feels like a lot of activity, the number of high debuts can be very misleading as Shinedown has the only new song to move into any of the Top 40 positions this week (the other 39 tracks are still the same songs only in a slightly different order)…
Newly arrived in the Top 50 are the latest singles from Breaking Benjamin and Bullet For My Valentine.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Pop Evil – “Footsteps”
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
DROPPING DOWN
Three Days Grace – “Human Race”
Muse – “Dead Inside”
Devour The Day – “Faith”
FUTURES REPORT
Trying to figure out the next #1 song is pretty much anybody’s guess at this point. The trio of songs with extremely strong debuts over three consecutive weeks has brought movement for nearly everything else on the chart to a standstill. It’s an especially tough landscape for new bands with so much new music out there simultaneously from so many of the format’s core artists. If you aren’t one of the few darlings of the programmers right now, it’s probably not the time to be hoping to break through the ceiling to the next level.
WRAP-UP
